Nicknamed 'the Queen of the Sea,' the Tonnara di Favignana has been getting very positive reviews from visitors, even obtaining Trip Advisor's Certificate of Excellence. The Tonnara di Favignana is open June through October, 10 am to 5 pm. In the months of July, August and September, opening hours are 10 am to 1:30 pm and 5 pm to 11 pm.

The history of the family, of Calabrian origins, took place in the rich Palermo of the years between the nineteenth and twentieth century. Storia Costruzione. La tonnara venne costruita, si presume, intorno XVII secolo, accanto al porto dell'Arenella.La prima data certa però è il 1830 quando venne acquistata dal Vincenzo Florio, e la tonnara venne quindi completamente ristrutturata sotto la guida dell'architetto Carlo Giachery.. Nel 1852 lo stesso Giachery si occupò di progettare il mulino che veniva utilizzato nel processo.

The former Florio delle Tonnare plant of Favignana and Formica is an ancient tonnara (a traditional fishing system for tuna), one of the largest in the Mediterranean Sea. It was here that Mr Ignazio Florio, by the end of the 19th century, created the revolutionary method of preservation of tuna, and built his famous plant.

Formerly used as a trap for Tuna fishing, the history dates back to the 1800s when it was owned by Vincenzo Florio. A replica of one of the wings of this building stands in St Petersburg Russia called Rinella which was the brainchild of one Zarina who stayed at the Tonnara and fell.
