In early 1954, Ferrari finally offered the four-cylinder sports/racer to customers as a two-liter model, with each cylinder displacing almost 500 cubic centimeters. The car was dubbed the 500 Mondial, in recognition of Ascari's back-to-back World Championships.

The 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider was entered into the 1954 Mille Miglia where it took a 2nd place finish overall, only being beaten by Alberto Ascari in the far more powerful Lancia D24. The 500 Mondial would go on to take 2nd place in the 12 Hours of Casablanca, again only losing out to a far more powerful car - the 4.5-litre Ferrari.

The Ferrari 500 Mondial chassis was powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine; 500 was the nominal cubic capacity of each cylinder. The model series first raced in late 1953, making this car, built in October 1954, a machine from the first year of production. It was the last-but-one Spider to be constructed.

A second series 500 Mondial was produced in 1954/5. These cars all used the Scaglietti 'spider' bodywork, but with a new Tipo 111 engine. Just a couple of weeks ago, RM Sotheby's sold a crashed, burned and seemingly left for scrap 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider for an astounding $1,875,000. What remained of the original body was crumbled and cracking. Corrosion was evident on the frame and bulkheads. There were no doors.
